CARA is involved in information, communication and education (IEC), behavior change communication (BCC) messaging, condom programming, HIV counseling and testing (HCT) and activities to Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission of HIV (PMTCT). Feedback from client satisfaction surveys indicated reasonable levels of basic knowledge in HIV/AIDS among targeted populations served by CARA. It is also noted that an increased number of beneficiaries accessing HTS services and condoms including in hard to reach areas and PMTCT services has increased.
The following are HIV prevention interventions done by CARA in districts of Kayunga, Mayuge, Mukono and Buhweju
- Social and behavioral interventions reaching 35,000 people including key and priority populations and the general population.
- Dissemination of IEC/BCC products on HTS, PMTCT, Condoms and SMC and 2,000 IEC materials distributed
- Condom distribution through established condom outlets and 1,000,000 condoms distributed
- HIV Counseling and Testing services including index client testing and tracing
HIV Counseling and testing Services
In order to scale up HIV prevention, CARA in collaboration with AIDS Health Care Foundation (AHF)-Uganda Cares and RHITES SW; CARA accelerated HIV Counseling and testing in , Mayuge , Buhweju and Kayunga districts. As a first step in HIV prevention, the partnership aimed at increasing accessing HIV Counseling and Testing services for people in fishing communities, commercial sex workers, and adults in long term sexual relationships, boda-boda riders and young people out of school and those in other busy places like market places among others
With that intervention a total of 12,217 clients have been counseled, tested and received results ( 6,108 = females, 6,109=males) with a positivity of 1.8%
